Microsoft's Biggest Miss [Minimal Mac]

minimalmac:

One of the benefits of a long car trip with my wife is the opportunity to have really great and insightful conversations with the smartest person I know. Yesterday, on the first leg of our trip, we spent some time discussing Microsoft’s many missed opportunities. The failure to take the iPhone…

Apple’s vision for the future of computing versus Microsoft’s vision for the future of computing.

Any questions?

On Windows 8 and that ‘No Compromises’ Mantra — 512 Pixels

minimalmac:

Can you imagine running Lion on an iPad, or booting a MacBook Air and seeing Launchpad instead of the Finder? Apple allows its hardware to help dictate what software is best suited for it. The company is willing to compromise on software features for a better user experience.

When Microsoft says “No compromises”, I hear “Can’t let go of the past.”

Idolize neither Bill Gates, Nor Steve Jobs

A very interesting article here:

Apple is undoubtedly the gold standard of today’s tech world. In fact, it’s probably the gold standard of American industry at the moment. Its innovative design, user interface, and ecosystem make it a titan in any category it enters. And it’s clear that Steve Jobs was the reason Apple rose to its current heights from the brink of bankruptcy. In the wake of his death, HBR espoused his greatness — something I’ve done as well. And he was great. Steve Jobs has likely been our generation’s most important leader in the world of business. But Steve Jobs is not the most important leader from the world of business. While Jobs should be who MBAs and industrial designers try to emulate, I’m not sure he’s who we should idolize. That respect should be bestowed on someone we talk less and less about, Bill Gates.

Maxwell Wessel, Harvard Business Review: November 1, 2011 12:29 PM

On the issue of who to “idolize”—Bill Gates or Steve Jobs—I would say that there are things from both men we can learn from.  And yet from a Christian world-view, I must submit that all Christians ought to imitate Christ, and godly men and women of the faith who have followed wholly after Christ.

Sure, Bill Gates has done much in the area of philanthropy. With his vast amount of wealth, he has been able to do what few Christians have—“eliminating diseases, increasing development standards, and generally fighting inequality.” But we must understand that no “good work” done in the name of the common can redeem anybody from dead works before the living God.

Yes, as Christians we should love our neighbor. And yes, both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have done much for the betterment of our society in their respective areas. Yet, eternal redemption is only through the blood of Jesus Christ—something both Bill and Steve need. (Hebrews 9:11-14)
